Pawn Shop Chronicles (2013) Review by Killer_Movie (horrorsession@gmail.com) from USA
Despite the considerable amount of great actors involved, this filmmanaged to remain off my radar until literally minutes before viewingit. So any expectations I had were formed in the few minutes I spentoverlooking the film, that said, "Pawn Shop Chronicles", in the endwasn't quite as good as it could have been, but it certainly had it'smoments and managed to stay entertaining. Director Wayne Kramer hasmore than proved his mettle in the past, writing and directing twofilm's which I have fond memories of "The Cooler" (2003) a film inwhich William H. Macy was brilliant in and "Running Scared" (2006), afilm starring Paul Walker who rejoins Kramer in this film's firstsegment. With a solid director and such a long list of talented actorsI felt this was going to be a sure thing. Then came the dialog fromwriter Adam Minarovich, weighing the film down like an anchor.

The film concentrates on a southern pawn shop run by Alton (VincentD'Onofrio) in an unusual town full of unusual folks. It presents threestories, all of which are uniquely tied to the shop and framed outwhile Alton and his buddy Johnson (Chi McBride) hang out, business asusual. These stories range from speed-freaks, to kidnapping and murder. Each tale revolves around one item bought or sold at the shop and howthey end up relating to one another in the span of one day. The firstinstallment stars Kevin Rankin, Lukas Haas, Norman Reedus and PaulWalker. It's another day in the life of a few meth heads and there isno shortage of dark humor & hi-jinx, Walker as "Raw Dog" is a sightworth seeing as he's in full on "tweaker" mode, quite a reversal fromthe norm. The second installment shifts gears from the quirky to thehorrific, starring Matt Dillon and Elijah Wood. Dillon plays "Richard"a man who finds a ring in a pawn shop belonging to his missing wifewho's been gone for six years. He literally drops everything and goeson the hunt for her, ready to dish out some sickly sweet revenge toanyone connected to the ring. If you're a horror fan you'll appreciatethis segment the most, I know I did. The third sequence, taking intoaccount the insane direction that the previous story took, it was a bitbland with a most bizarre ending. It was all about Brendan Fraser, aburned out Elvis impersonator who faces an important decision whileperforming at the county fair right around the same time that a paradeof nude women, all with zombie like expressions begin filing onto thescene.

It's all a bizarre & disjointed film which was trying to be somethinglike a hillbilly version of Pulp Fiction, but failing to be anythingbut a mish-mash of the most strange and peculiar elements. Things doall relate to one another eventually and it's an entertaining film withsome redeemable qualities, but the script is far from brilliant. Ican't think of any memorable lines given or anything that made me laughout loud. While succeeding to be amusing it didn't go much further thanthat. I believe Wayne Kramer made the most out of what he had to workwith, but with a script lacking in any serious wit or style there isonly so much that one could do. This film will likely be forgottenbefore it's even discovered.

Pawn Shop Chronicles (2013) Review by Snaggletooth . from United Kingdom
I literally was laughing out loud at a few of the early scenes fromthis movie. I sat there thinking, yeah, this is my kinda thing. Themeth-heads part was brilliant and the ring part too right up until therescue. But.... then it all just went limp. I liked the idea of thingsbeing interlinked with the pawn shop, but what the hell was going on atthe end? All the early promise just seemed to dissipate. What a letdown. Such a shame because this could have had cult written all overit. A smart and darkly funny little indie flick, with decent acting allthe way through, but alas, it got murdered by the end. What a shameindeed. But the first half is certainly worth seeing.

Pawn Shop Chronicles (2013) Review by Allen Hoover (CptEeyore@aol.com) from Tullytown, PA, USA

Hadn't heard anything about this movie, or even known of its existence, until about an hour before I watched it tonight, lol. First off, forall you Norman Reedus fans: Even though he gets near top billing, Younever see his face, and his screen time is like 2 minutes, so calm downfor thinking you found a new Reedus film to be excited about, lol.(Don't you hate it when they do that :o/) This film's a good example ofthat scenario where the concept or premise of the film, its preview, and poster, make the film look really good, only to have the executionand/or the end of the film fall flat. High quality acting performanceswere given by the entire all star cast, Brandon Frasier especially, impressive as a lost, struggling, Elvis impersonator. There were somegood, entertaining moments in the movie that gave me hope, but that'sas far as it got. For every moment it seems like it was going torecover, it would fall again, including the ending, which was a letdown, and, honestly, even for a movie of this genre, I felt the endingwas in bad taste and crossed a line, as they tried to make humor of aman keeping women in captivity. VERY BAD timing, after what just wentdown in Ohio. You know how a movie can be so weird, but in a good way,or so weird in a bad way ? Well for me, this had both, but in the end, just left me feeling in a bad way. But, I say "for me", and rate thisin the middle because, I'm sure there's going to be some of you sickpups out there that's going to think it was hilarious, while otherswill think it's just plain weird, in a bad way. 2.5 out of 5, or 5 outof 10 IMDb stars.
