&Me (2013) Review by lossowitz from The Hague, The Netherlands
The pretentious title containing the too hip ampersand which will nodoubt be passé in a few months, leaving an unpronounceable name, directs the movie immediately to the corner of embarrassments, andsadly, it stays there. The book on which the movie is based is calledFremdkörper. A perfectly suitable title so this choice is the first ofmany that puzzles.
Then we have the story of two people, leaving behind their unfulfilledlives to head to Bruxelles, the capital of the European bureaucracywhere nobody stays forever and everybody always is on the move. Theyfall in love instantly and move in together. The books of Oscar van denBoogaard are packed with people who feel deeply and voice thosefeelings and therefore his characters are often not very believable. Ina film we need to believe the characters, and in this case the directorgives us very little reason. Both are unhappy in their respectivelives. For the girl, 24 and still living in a hotel with an overbearingmother, leaving is almost a logical step. However, Eduard, the malelead is obviously a very successful law expert with a life full offriends in Berlin that he leaves behind. His sister doesn't understandhis depart, and so doesn't the public. There must have been a terribleexperience, a lost love, treason, something to make him leave forBruxelles and fall immediately in love with a woman even though he isgay. (And can get laid anytime because he is a very hot man with a verylarge and beautiful house.) But neither in the beginning, nor in thecourse of the film do we get any explanation, and this absence giveshis dramatic choices an arbitrary streak and makes his emotionaloutburst in the bath a parody.
The girl, Edurne, is modeled on the 'crazy funny girl', like an AudreyHepburn in Funny Girl or Monique van de Ven in Turkish Delight, and sheis no doubt cast for her resemblance to Penelope Cruz. However, she hasnor the acting abilities, nor the script to make Edurne a roundcharacter. Her ridiculous demands for promises to never leave her, don't make her sympathetic just a demanding lunatic.
Some relief comes when Teun Luijkx as Richard joins the menage, andwith a few lines he establishes his character as someone who reallyneeds love. But at the same time he makes a puzzling transition inclothes: from a shabby mover/dealer to a sharply dressed hipster.
Happiness doesn't last, but that Wisdom comes at the end of this movie, which is curious because when things do not last, is when the dramacomes, and that is here exactly one and a half scene. And again, nothing explained and nothing felt by the audience: they are justmaking notes. "Ah, relationship over." The last shot is a curiousexotic landscape where Richard walks. Is there a message, a pointer oris this poetic justice? One fears that the production got some moneyfrom Catalonia, for the scene is superfluous at least.
Then there are some clichés (drunk scene, Maria Callas for dramaticeffect, ending in the Atomium) and some errors (Edurnes first day inBruxelles her apartment is fully furnished with even dirty dishes, IchBin Wie Du from Marianne Rosenberg being a Dutch hit for her and not aGerman one (that's Er Gehört Zu Mir)) and technical problems: lots oflong shots out of focus.
What is left is a very immature, puzzled and pretentious film whichleaves this viewer quite embarrassed.
&Me (2013) Review by ph-nijman from Amsterdam, The netherlands
You've got Dutch film, French-, British, German, Portugeuse etc. Butwhat is a European film? To me &ME is a good example. Actors andactresses from different countries, at least two or three differentlanguages and and sometimes don't bother with the subtitles.
&ME has all that, besides a bizarre plot(or no plot), sometimes weirdacting and a story (is there one?) you can write on a napkin. But ifyou sit back and enjoy the movie, don't wonder to much about thefriendship you see unfolding, or the bizarre workings of the EU-councilyou'll have a good time.
It's a small movie about a love story that takes some weird twists. There is some nudity in it, but not something us Main-land-Europeansworry about. And because it's a small movie you'll forgive it it'sfault.
&Me (2013) Review by Diand from Amsterdam
I stumbled upon this during a sneak preview and I must unfortunatelyadmit it is probably one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It has aterrible screenplay, most actions and characters in the story areutterly unbelievable. It is so badly edited that the pacing is wrong inalmost every scene. Camera-work is amateurish (Dutch cameramen usuallyARE reliable in this regard) and the unexperienced director has no clueabout making the story work for the screen. Most acting here is solaughable that the audience laughed at scenes that should beheartbreaking. The only acceptable performance comes from Rossy dePalma, known from several Almodóvar movies.
The story is about several European civil servants meeting at theEU-center Brussels and starting and finishing relations. It is somewhatin the realm of Bertolucci's The Dreamers: Young people experimentingwith their lives, sexuality and ending back in reality again. At firstsight it seems like some sponsored EU propaganda, showing how great itis to meet all kinds of different Europeans. Many scenes are filmed inBrussels and Strassbourg, the EU color blue is prominently used (eventhe plaster is blue). However as the movie progresses more criticismarises: unnecessary locations to Strasbourg, nobody actually works inthe movie (the only work scenes are afternoon drinks). Add to this thatyou can see the characters not only as standing for themselves but alsofor their respective nations, the whole pointlessness of Europeanintegration comes to light (intended or not?). In the end everybody isalone again, signified by the atom symbolism in the Brussels Atomium.
It seems like an intelligent movie, it even could have been, but itfails so utterly in all movie departments that I can unfortunately onlyrecommend that you avoid this like the plague.
