Story: Ip Man's peaceful life in Foshan changes after Gong Yutian seeks an heir for his family in Southern China. Ip Man then meets Gong Er who challenges him for the sake of regaining her family's honor. After the Second Sino-Japanese War, Ip Man moves to Hong Kong and struggles to provide for his family. Sadly speaking, "The Grandmaster" does not get a grand score from me.
Before this film, 3 movies have been made about Ip Man, with the firsttwo by Donnie Yen. Like it or not, first movers always have anadvantage. The prequel of Ip Man - "A Legeng is Born - Ip Man" - didpretty well, featuring a Wing Chun practitioner Dennis To. But, in myopinion, all these 3 movies did not sufficiently capture aspects of theMan's life stories that many fans are looking for - his philosophyabout Wing Chun, how he took up Wing Chun, and, of course, hismentor-ship of Bruce Lee.
"The Grandmaster", in my opinion, missed this golden opportunity tosatisfy the thirst of martial arts fans on these aspects.
For one, I am surprised to see that the script chose to focus onsomething other than Wing Chun - the so-called "64 forms", a kind ofmartial art - and revolve around the relationship between Man and GongEr (Zhang Ziyi), with a rather strange majority of screen time placedon Er. In fact, I strongly suspected that the "Grandmaster" in the filmis actually Gong Er and not Ip Man (and perhaps this film will be sosuccessful in this respect that there will be another film on Gong Er?)
I believe audeince is in for the story behind Ip Man, Wing Chun andBruce Lee, not "64 forms" or the fictitious Gong Er. It is clearlyfocus misplaced.
The fighting sequence is a major disappointment as well. Fightingsequence is barely 5 moves in total, with the camera zooming in on tothe hands or legs and, which is my pet peeve, the overuse of slowmotion and special effects that obscure the real beauty of the moves. Iam not sure whether these effects are specially chosen to mask the factthat Tony Leung is not a martial artist, but applying these on veteranssuch as Zhang Ziyi - who has learn some martial arts before - is awaste of talents.
Taking a step back, I suspect that the producers and director seemed towant to break away from the proved formula of story-telling about IpMan and Wing Chun, and took risk in the script and even cinematography.However, I see traces of Zhang Yimou in the technique, which I neitheram opposed to nor strongly encouraged. However, I think the directorOVERDID on the special and visual effects, because, in my opinion, hemay have wanted every scene and frame to be visually stunning. Whilethere are many scenes (including the special effects) that are indeedvery captivating - e.g. those at the train station involving the duelof Gong Er and San - these effects quickly became a major muddlingdistraction for me, to an extent that I felt like the film has overrunin length in its appeal to audience.
I prefer a film that takes care of its basics well, before venturinginto the visual/special effects (what I consider icing on the cake). Inany story involving Ip Man, the basics should be the man, his family,his time and his Wing Chun.
Finally, the film applied another technique often seen in Zhang Yimou'sfilms - the somewhat emotionally derived script with somewhat woodenexpressions on its casts, with a hope to create an ambiance of mysteryand helplessness (e.g. in a time that saw China fell into the hands ofthe Japanese during World War II). Personally, this technique is awaste of the acting talents of the likes of Tony Leung and Zhang Ziyi.
"The Grandmaster" is clearly a focus misplaced.
I had higher hopes for anything Ip Man and Wing Chun.

Wong Kar-Wai's 10 years-in-the-making of the so-called Ip Man biopic isexquisitely photographed and blessed with some dazzling fightchoreography, but THE GRANDMASTER is mostly a scattershot mess ofunfocused direction.
When director Wong Kar-Wai first announced the project way back in2002, I bet a lot of die-hard fans are eager to see how thecritically-acclaimed art-house director is going to do a big-screentreatment of the legendary Ip Man. Fast forward to 2013 (after a stringof delays and whatnot), THE GRANDMASTER has came and gone with mostlyfavorable reviews and successful box office runs. However, afterfinally watching it, I must say that THE GRANDMASTER turns out to be anoverrated effort after all.
Likewise, Wong Kar-Wai is always meticulous when comes to distinctivevisual flair. Philippe Le Sourd and Song Xiaofei's sumptuouscinematography is nice to look at, while beautifully framed YuenWoo-Ping's fight choreography with such balletic mix of slow motion andvarious camera speeds. The rest of the technical credits are equallyace -- ranging from its elaborate production design to its detailedcostume design. On the plus side, the first half is particularlyengaging. As for the cast, Zhang Ziyi excels the most as the hotheaded,yet emotionally frustrating Gong Er.
The second half is hastily stitched together, while burdened byterribly inconsistent pace. It's understandable that Wong Kar-Wai'smovie is always fragmented but this time, THE GRANDMASTER is way unevenyet unfocused. Another biggest problem here is the sudden change offocus from narrating Ip Man story to Gong Er story. If that's notinsulting enough, the introduction of Chang Chen's The Razor characterfeels vague and needless altogether. Apart from Zhang Ziyi'sexceptional performance, it's rather surprising to see theusually-reliable Tony Leung Chiu-Wai doesn't impress much as Ip Man.Although he is charismatic enough, he fails to expand his Ip Mancharacter with a satisfying emotional center other than looking cool orbroods a lot. Popular Korean actress Song Hye-Kyo is sadly neglected ina thankless role (thanks to Wong Kar-Wai for cutting off most of herscenes in the editing room) as Ip Man's wife, Zhang Yongcheng.
It's quite sad to see what could have been another classic Wong Kar-Waimovie-in-the-making turns out to be a disappointment. Strictly fordie-hard fans.

This project has been 10 years in the making, one year in the editingroom. It is a great film and the current IMDb rating of 6.6 isridiculous. I think I know why people are rating the film so low. Theyare expecting to see another Wilson Yip version. This is not a movieabout Ip Man by Wong Kar Wai but more like a Wong Kar Wai film with IpMan as one of the characters. The cinematography is gorgeous theediting is perfect the acting and fight choreography is amazing. Nowhere is another factor that makes people misjudging the film. Theoriginal rough cut was 4 hours long. Now it is just above 2 hours. Itis told with a non-linear narrative, jumping back and forth in time. Itdoesn't focus on one character with one plot but instead it, kindaunevenly so, jumps between characters focusing on the nature of thecharacters philosophy, thoughts, feelings etc. instead of having astraight forward, non confusing and easy to follow story line. It's amovie filled with character, low on plot and for a marketed Martialarts movie this can potentially turn people off. Evidently it has.
Verdict: Top notch-super beautiful cinematography, photography,editing, choreography etc. Confusing story-line with some, at firstglance, important characters turning up only to disappear for the rest(or most part) of the film. Will satisfy art-house fans and WKW fans ingeneral but most likely disappoint the hard core kung fu fans,expecting another Donnie Yen version and in doing so, Missunderstandingthe film. They should add another 20 or 30 minutes. 9/10 ***½/****
